Cabbage Trees against a western sky

Cabbage Trees against a western sky

I have no idea where this photo was taken. On Saturday, I piled into a very posh BMW and very comfortably enjoyed the view as Elisa, Donna, Dave and I headed out into the middle of somewhere (again, I don’t know where) to go to a party that Ash was djing at. I do, however, know what this photo is of, so at least I can tag it properly for SEO purposes ;)

It’s a cabbage tree, ti kouka in Maori, and Cordyline australis if you want to be fancy about it. It’s also my current Kiwiana crush (the first being the Pukeko!). I love these trees, they are so completely different than anything back home in Canada. When I look at them, I can begin to sense just how far I’ve really come and they make me smile. Plus they look kinda mop-toppy which is always endearing.

Actually, I’m not all that positive that it is a cabbage tree. I think Ash named them as such to me one day soon after I got here, but after searching the interwebs, the photos of cabbage trees look a little different. Their leaves are spikey, and they dont have spindly trunks. So, let’s just call it such, and then if someone ever reads this and corrects me, I can change it. Besides, “cordyline” reminds me of “Coraline” and that’s kinda fun, like what Neil Gaiman would name these trees because they really are kinda Gaiman-y.

The rest of the photos from this trip are here.
